Nile Delta

Country: Egypt
Size: 1000 km²

Egypt is the most sensitive Mediterranean country to sea level rise (SLR). The North Nile Delta (Egypt) is particulary vulunerable to the impact of sea level rise and salt water intrusion which affect the Nile Delta Aquifer quality. This in turn will directly affect the water quality and the potential agrigultural productivity but also human settlements. By using hydrological-, soil- and geotechnical data, together with information about the hydrochemical characteristics of the respective aquifers, as well as information retrieved and assimilated from remote sensing imagery, integrated model coupling concepts are developed to predict the future conditions and the suitable remedation / mitigation alternatives. The outputs will be analysed, transferred into recommendations for good governance and dissemminated to relevant decision makers and stakeholders.
